Edinburgh, Scotland’s crown jewel, is an enchanting city brimming with romantic opportunities and perfect date spots for couples.

Whether you’re planning a date night in Edinburgh, seeking fun date ideas, or looking for inspiration for a first date, the city has a plethora of options to keep the romance alive. From its historic cobblestone streets to its vibrant cultural scene, Edinburgh offers a magical backdrop for any romantic adventure.

In this blog post, we’ll explore 19 top date spots in Edinburgh, recommend charming places to stay for couples, highlight romantic spots in the city, and provide you with all the date ideas you need for an unforgettable experience.

After living so close to Edinburgh for a long time, we’ve been lucky enough to try a number of these experiences for our own date nights. We think that whether you live close to Edinburgh or you’re planning a trip to the city from far and wide, travelling as a couple, it is always important to have date nights together and appreciate the romantic side of the city!

19 Top Date Spots in Edinburgh

1. Explore a Museum Together

Fancy impressing your partner with a blend of culture and charm?

Edinburgh’s museums are your go-to. Start at the National Museum of Scotland, where history meets breath-taking city views.

For something sweeter, the Chocolatarium lets you dive into chocolate-making—because nothing says romance like chocolate-covered fingers.

National Museum of Scotland is a great place to explore together with a beautiful rooftop.

One of the best parts about exploring the museums in Edinburgh is that the majority of them are free to visit! There are only two museums that charge for entrance; the Chocolatarium and Surgeon’s Halls.

Whether you’re planning to see some of the most stunning views at the National Museum of Scotland’s rooftop or you’re making your own chocolate at the Chocolatarium, they are all excellent choices!

2. Afternoon Tea

Channel your inner aristocrat with a delightful afternoon tea. Places like the Colonnades at the Signet Library offer elegance with a side of scones.

Upgrade to a boozy afternoon tea if you’re feeling cheeky—The Dome and Red Bus Bistro are top spots to toast to love. Afternoon Tea might not be everyone’s cup of tea (yes, it’s a bad joke, we know!) but if you’ve never tried this experience before then you might be pleasantly surprised!

What is even better is that you will get to try unique afternoon tea experiences such as the Red Bus Bistro where you can hop aboard this Instagrammable red bus and enjoy the scenery and each other’s company!

3. Pub Crawl

Going on a pub crawl is a great date to go on within Edinburgh as you will be spoilt for choice.

A pub crawl isn’t just for the lads! Embark on a spirited adventure across Edinburgh’s eclectic pub scene.

Sample local brews, share tipsy laughs, and explore hidden gems together. Guided tours can make this experience even more memorable (and safe).

If you’re a history-fanatic, this is also a great way to sample drinks in a variety of old pubs and learn about their background. For example, head over to the Sheep Heid Inn as their history really dates back and it gives you a great insight into how the city has evolved over time.

If you both share a love of history then this could turn into a really romantic activity to do together! Alternatively, you can just join a pub crawl and get drunk together. We’re not judgey!

4. Camera Obscura and World of Illusions

Dive into a world where nothing is as it seems. Camera Obscura is a playground of optical illusions and interactive exhibits. Perfect for couples who enjoy scratching their heads together—prepare to be amazed and amused.

This was actually one of the first dates that we went on together and well… look at us now!

5. Edinburgh Zoo

Going to the zoo isn’t for everyone but it is definitely an awesome day out together. If you’re lucky with the weather then you will be able to enjoy learning about the different animals at the zoo, what they are doing for the environment and eating some ice-cream along the way.

Edinburgh Zoo has some beautiful grounds so you'll have a lovely time exploring.

Like any other zoo, the food is quite expensive here so we would recommend either taking your own picnic or grabbing a bite to eat once you’ve finished at the zoo. Our favourite part of Edinburgh zoo is getting to see the wallabies roaming around and wandering through the petting zoo.

Did you know that there is also Corstophine Hill behind the zoo which you can climb and hear the sounds of the animals? Well, you do now! This is one of the 7 hills of Edinburgh that is definitely a great idea for once you’ve finished wandering around the zoo.

6. Aquarium

Take a deep dive into romance at the Sea World Aquarium. The serene, underwater world sets the stage for quiet, intimate moments.

Walk through the shark tunnel for a thrilling experience, then head to the coast for a picnic with views of the Forth Bridges. This is another date that we went on quite early into our relationship and was also one of our favourites too!

7. Hike One of the Seven Hills

Hiking is an incredible date to share together because you get to experience new wonders together.

Edinburgh has a plethora of places where you can go hiking including 7 hills. If you’re up to the challenge and want to experience this together then it is possible to hike all 7 of the hills in one day.

This is one of our favourite best date ideas in Edinburgh because it ticks all our boxes. You get to see some beautiful sights from plenty of viewpoints, challenge yourselves and get some fresh air whilst you're at it.

Please note that this is a difficult challenge if you’re walking between each hill also so this is not a light hike at all. The hills that you can hike include Carlton Hill, Blackford Hill, Craiglockart Easter Hill, Arthur’s Seat, Castle Hill, Braid Hill and Corstophine Hill.

This is definitely one way to see the city and get some good exercise together whilst you’re at it! You don’t have to climb them all though even just hiking one together is an incredible feat and you will get to share this experience together. Our favourite hill is definitely walking Arthur’s Seat so this is one that you can’t miss out in Edinburgh!

If you’re not used to hiking then there is no greater feeling than when you get to the top of the hill and stare out at the beauty of the city. If you are planning to take on the 7 hills challenge then make sure you that you leave very early in the morning so that you can get to see all the views in the light of day.

What better way to spend you first date night in Edinburgh than putting your way to fun with a game of mini golf.

Edinburgh’s themed courses, like the neon-lit Portal Golf and quirky Fore Play, offer a playful and competitive date experience. Who will emerge as the mini-golf champion?

Portal Mini Golf is a really unique place for it because it is all lit up in neon lights. Each hole has a different theme and we really loved how quirky it is.
