Depending on the time of year that you choose to visit Faro will vary on which activities you can take part in and how to make the most of your time. If you’re planning to do a road-trip around the Algarve and use Faro as a base for day trips then you may feel better visiting out of the tourist season to make the most of your time there!
Generally speaking, Portugal is hot pretty much all-year round with some colder spells during the winter.
How Many Days in Faro?
In general, Faro is a pretty small town within the Algarve so you won’t need to spend too much time there to be able to make the most of it.
If you’re looking for a relaxing break away then you may want to spend a week or two. This is so that you can leisurely wander around, enjoy the beach, sunbathe and of course drink plenty of cocktails.
However, if you’re visiting Faro purely to explore the sights that it has to offer then we would recommend spending around 2 days in Faro.
You will be able to see the majority of the sights in this short period of time so Faro is perfect for a weekend trip. For anyone that wants to enjoy more of a relaxing pace, we would suggest spending around 3 days in Faro. This is especially if you’re planning to take a trip to the infamous Benagil Caves.
Why Should You Visit Faro?
There are so many reasons why Faro should be on your Portugal bucket list but we’ve narrowed it down to 3 of our favourite reasons to visit.
1. Reasonably priced
Don’t get us wrong, during the peak season it can be a little more expensive but generally speaking Faro is well priced for what it offers.
Not just that but it is also an upcoming tourist destination so head out there to be a trendsetter! You can also find plenty of great deals on the boutique hotels in Faro depending on the season you’re travelling.
Whilst you’re there, you will find that the food is not too expensive and depending on the time of year that you travel to Portugal, you will often find cheap flights with low budget airlines.
2. Great Food
Portuguese cuisine is one of our favourites and no doubt something that you will really enjoy too. We in particular really enjoyed a restaurant called the Old Tavern in Faro Portugal. The food was absolutely delicious and the tapas was a great way to try lots of different dishes!
Different regions of Portugal will bring you new foods to try. Where you will find plenty of Pastel de Natas in Lisbon, there are few in Faro.
In the Algarve region, you will tend to find more meat-based dishes and you will find lots of different fish dishes. Being so close to the coast, you will have lots of fresh fish to try. In particular, one dish that is very come in Faro is Cataplana which is a form of stew.
3. Winter Sun
One of the best reasons to visit Portugal is that the weather is generally quite warm throughout the year. If you’re looking to jet away and enjoy some winter sun then Faro is a perfect destination to do just that!
Whilst it won’t be complete sunbathing weather, it will still be warm enough to wander around and enjoy the sights. Also, if you’re from the UK like us, it will be much warmer than it is here!
